Mohammed Alothman on AI for Good in Public Services

I am Mohammed Alothman and have always believed in the power that technology, especially artificial intelligence, can bring to overcome most of the world's difficult challenges. One area where the promise is being realized is government services 12.

Governments try to modernize and optimize processes by adopting AI tech solutions more and more with an intention to optimize decision-making and reduce backlogs and further support citizens.

Very recently, the UK Government provided an exemplary case on how AI and the government could be engaged responsibly by coming up with data publication using Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard, or ATRS.

This endeavor is both a public enlightenment about what is happening with regard to using AI tools and creates the new standard for greater transparency and accountability in serving public interests.

AI: New Lever for Modern Public Services

The UK is certainly one of the best examples of AI for good. Departments are currently putting AI into action to address particularly pertinent issues, such as:

    • Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office: AI supports quicker responses for Brits needing support abroad.

    • Ministry of Justice: Algorithms provide understanding of how people interact with the justice system and then through it, policy.

    • Department for Business and Trade: However, this tool has artificial intelligence. Its capability is to find out companies with the most probability in exporting from the country to deliver a focused stream of support to those companies that really have high growth potential.

These implementations are efficient and part of a wider vision toward better results for citizens. For instance, the AI-enabled tool of the Department for Business and Trade will remove the laborious process by hand of going through over 5 million registered businesses, thereby delivering targeted insights in how to grow businesses across borders.

Because of the ethical and the pragmatic use of technology that I am very concerned about, these trends are motivating. They illustrate how AI and the government can together make a difference, not just in the UK but as an example for other countries.

    Transparency: The Backbone of Trust

The other important aspect while injecting AI into public services relates to the trust factor. Systems that are highly complex but the black box isn't open to analysis would raise many eyebrows; this is where the example from the UK Government comes into the picture.

UK Science Secretary Peter Kyle fittingly said, "Science Secretary Peter Kyle fittingly commented: It demands transparency regarding why and how the public sector is implementing these algorithmic tools in order to obtain trust in them".

Manufacturing records that would show the process of developing and training the AI tools, technology, and safeguards in the tool can bestow transparency and trust with citizens in the functionality of the tools. Being on the cutting edge of the progression of the AI ethics discipline, I feel that this is the amount of disclosure necessary for mainstream uses of AI.

The Role of AI in the Economic Growth

Another important area has been left untouched-that role of AI within the process of economic growth-that is, the key characteristic of the UK's "Plan for Change". It's through the application of AI that the government has now improved public services as well as reduced taxes on the money of people in the same way.

For example, the algorithmic tool the Department of Business Trade is using is helping the clients access international markets much more quickly. This use of AI depicts AI for good, which ensures technology augments economic stability and maximizes business opportunities.

As per the Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds:

"Our use of AI plays a vital and growing role in allowing high-growth businesses to maximize the export opportunities available to them.".

All these developments notwithstanding, it is apparent that AI is more than just a machine to make things efficient but a driver in transforming a less just and less well-off society.

Responsible AI Deployment: The New Benchmark

The UK Government's commitment to responsible AI further comes out in its newly announced guidelines for algorithmic transparency. It requires:

    • Citizens should have access to transparency records of all AI-tools in use that have a bearing on their engagement or influence through the decisions made.

    • Transparency of the source of data, the kind of technologies used, and how the risks are mitigated

    • Decisions must undergo human oversight.

Such practices are indispensable to ensure that AI is applied at least to a good degree in an ethical manner. Connected to national security, there are exceptions, and aside from these, this framework erects a high bar for the responsible application of AI.

    Challenges and the Way Ahead

Of course, there are challenges. Bias in AI models and the need for human oversight in decision making is a live area of concern. Public awareness regarding functionalities and limitations of AI is also essential in building trust and comprehension.

I am very much involved with the ethical use of AI through developing AI tech solutions. I think that these are areas of opportunity in which to learn. In facing them, we would be able to unlock the true potential of AI for society.

    Looking Ahead

UK governments serve as a model of the proper way AI should work for and with the government to effectively influence social change. Resolutely embracing AI will serve in the construction of a future designed to improve life, promote creative solutions, and breed trust

To me, this is only the beginning. This journey to embed AI for good in public services is a testament of what is possible when technology and human ingenuity come together for the greater good.
